Working Playground was founded in 1991 to bring the arts into New York City classrooms with the belief that art is essential to human development, education and culture. Our purpose is to support schools and communities that are lacking the opportunity and resources to study an art form and use the arts to inspire, enliven, and enrich students’ educational experiences. Our programs have visited over 150 New York City public schools and engaged more than 8,000 young people (most of whom are from low-income homes), teachers and community members.
With over a decade of experience and improving the lives of young people, Working Playground has become a highly respected arts education institution in New York City, supported by such funders as the National Endowment for the Arts, The New York Times Company Foundation and Prudential Securities Foundation. Our programs appeared on NBC’s Dateline and in publications such as The New York Times, The New York Post, New York Magazine and People Magazine.
